Sharepoint was initially developed by a company called Vermeer Technologies in 1996 specifically for intranet and extranet collaboration purposes. In December 1997, Microsoft Corporation acquired Vermeer for approximately $200 million dollars largely due to its potential impact on business communication systems.

Today, SharePoint is available both as an On-premises server product (SharePoint Server) which allows companies full control over their own infrastructure or through cloud-based services like Office365 that offer greater flexibility but also relinquish some degree of local administration rights depending upon subscription level chosen by the organization.
